As Israel is still committing continuous genocide in Gaza, Maersk has delivered many of the weapons and equipment used in their direct attacks on civilians.
While Maersk have been undoubtedly revealed — with extensive documentation — to transport military cargo, including F-35 parts from Lockheed Martin in Texas and Terma in Denmark, the company has internally misinformed their employees and denied shipping any military equipment to Israel.
Internal digital intranet messages obtained by Kollektivist reveal that Maersk management has lied to thousands, possibly all, of their employees about their role in these shipments.
An internal message titled “Topic: Transport of military equipment and components into Israel” stated:
“Maersk does not accept any shipments of military weapons or ammunition to Israel or Gaza.”
“Maersk Line Limited (MLL), a US flag subsidiary of Maersk, is serving defense contracts with the US Government and MLL has shipments to Israel in furtherance of US-Israel government-to-government programs.
Under these programs, MLL does not ship arms or ammunition into Israel. Shipments into Israel by MLL include spare parts for vehicles, tents and safety equipment, etc.”
In another intranet post titled “Topic: Shipping weapons and arms into Israel or Gaza,” Maersk declared:
“Maersk is not shipping weapons or arms into Israel nor into Gaza. The same goes for our subsidiaries.”
“As a global organization, specifically with the role we play in global trade, we are committed to responsible business practices. This also includes applying standards and principles to ensure that we do not carry out any shipments of weapons or ammunition to countries or areas currently involved in armed conflicts, or that are subject to an arms embargo.
Both Israel and Gaza fall under this category, as do many other locations around the world with ongoing active conflicts, with the notable example of Ukraine, where we have continuously applied the same approach throughout the ongoing war. Neither Israel nor Ukraine is under an arms embargo.
To live up to our Values and meet our commitments under UN Global Compact and OECD guidance, etc., we apply a voluntary arms embargo for these areas.”
Yet, Maersk’s own bills of lading and reports from Palestinian Youth Movement, Mask Off Maersk, Danwatch, Information, Declassified, The Ditch, and Kollektivist reveal a very different reality.
The captains of the two main vessels involved in Maersk's weapons' shipments to Israel, Maersk Detroit and Maersk Nexoe, have been called to court in Barcelona to be interrogated.
They did not appear for the first scheduled court hearing on May 12 even though Maersk Nexoe was docked in Barcelona Port just 6km away from the court room on the day of the interrogation.
With Maersk’s ongoing weapons facilitation, Israel’s genocide in Gaza has presumably killed more than 100,000 civilians, including tens of thousands of children and more journalists than ever before in history.
Survivors in Gaza are currently being starved to death by Israel, who are still directly bombing civilians and just burned down yet another tent camp with children inside.
By directly lying on their internal platform, Maersk has coerced thousands of employees into complicity in genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, while seeking to guard profits and reputation.
